He was the conductor who sufferred from illness throughout his life and died at 48? in 1963. (I think it was cancer.) There is a sense of deep understanding of life and struggles against the fate -- very similar to the life of Beethoven. Yet, there is also a sense of Schopenhauerian acceptance of life. In part nihilistic, in part accepting the fate, there is something that transcends beyond denial (or human emotions). Yes, this is my favorite performance of Beethoven's fifth symphony.
