yes that chic reporter is the classic idiot that only admires whats in a pretty package,,,there is a study from a minnesota university that says something about the potencial corrosion of engine components that has chromium (rings) by organic acids present in this oils, although absolutelly scientific does not provide exact figures of decay or anything like that,, I gues it will be a matter of try and see, the 300 series mercedes are virtually indestructible running on regular diesel.
Used Vegetable Oil is much more viscous (thicker) than either petro-diesel or biodiesel. You can use Straight Used Vegetable Oil if the temperature is above +10°. It means that certain models of diesel cars (such as Mercedes 300TD) drives on vegetable fuel without any modifications during warmer months of spring, summer and autumn and uses diesel fuel during the winter. Perfect VegiHybrid :)
Diesels can run "with little or no alteration" on BioDiesel only. SVO/WVO require a two-tank system to ensure the fuel is at least 160*f before it reaches the injection system. In any case, using SVO/WVO in an onroad vehicle is illegal until you pay the fuel taxes AND get the conversion certified by the EPA.
The WVO/SVO "renewed interest" is whats called a fad, like all fads it will eventually loose interest when something more interesting comes along

I'd like 2c how long a diesel engine can run on used vegetable grease before it needs a rebuild.

Yes your right you shouldn't post incorrect information. SVO/WVO is an "alternative" fuel and not illegal.
If you didn't know, just south of me has been built a production plant to product Biodiesel and what is Biodiesel?
Biodiesel comes from vegetable oil (vegidiesel / vegifuel).

What is Biodiesel?
Biodiesel can be obtained from vegetable oil (vegidiesel / vegifuel), or animal fats . Biodiesel is a non-fossil fuel alternative to petrodiesel.

"you did not state its use"
Neither did you. If you want to be specific, you should do so from the start.
