In this video:

Cecilia Bartoli, mezzo soprano
Album: Rossini Heroines

Performed by La Fenice Theater Orchestra
Conducted by Ion Marin

This time it is Bartoli singing this aria. And since she is the only Italian singer that I heard singing this aria, I'll just say she should know what she is doing when she says "m'avanza" (no (more)hope remains to me) instead of ci avanza as any other singer says.. So, here she is...

About the score: As you can tell I am using pdf files for my videos and there is no way to transpose the pdf scores.. So, some of my videos may not be a match.

I hope you can figure out all those scribbles over the score.. Some do match the way Bartoli is singing and some don't. But this aria has such variation in interpretation that I doubt there can be a perfect-match edition of this score. Also, I do not have the choir partition.

Gioachino Rossini : L'assedio di Corinto "Giusto Ciel! In Tal Periglio"
Libretto: Luigi Balocchi & Alexandre Soumet

Giusto Ciel! in tal periglio
Più consiglio,
più speranza Non ci avanza,
Che piangendo, che gemendo
Implorar la tua pietà, etc

Merciful Lord! In such peril
the only course,
the only hope which remains to us,
is weeping, lamenting
to beg Thy mercy, etc..

  • Thank you strider881.. I updated the description with your correction. And what does "ci avanza" mean that others are singing?

  • It means "remains us".

("mi" is the italian translation for the personal pronoun "me"; "ci" the italian translation for "us")

  • Thanks a lot. I gotta learn Italian..
