Remembrance Day Slideshow - Teacher made

This video slideshow is in response to a problem I encountered with my Grade 4/5 class. When I asked them to brainstorm ideas for the term "Remembrance Day," their responses were disheartening: "dead soldiers," "tanks," "guns," "war," "casket..." etc.

It was a problem as there was an extreme deficit of understanding of what being a soldier entails. Not only is it sacrificing oneself for the good of one's country or for the protection of another, but a family's pain in missing their loved one. It turns excruciating when they lose their loved one far away from home. A death caused by harm.

There are many instances, too many in fact, when soldiers do come home to their families but it is a stranger who comes through the door, damaged, mentally and emotionally, maimed by the harrowing inexperiences of war's inhumanity.


I decided to create a video using various images I borrowed from the internet to explain that Remembrance Day is about human sacrifice, not only by the people who were killed or maimed in the field, but by the painful sacrifice of their families, hoping to see him or her again with arms embracing with joy and relief, not breaking down and saluting a casket, embracing each other with loss and grief.

I made sure to include female soldiers and civilians who lost their lives in the field as they are sometimes overlooked when we honour the Fallen.
