My guess would be that these groups were infiltrated by provocateurs from the very start - giving the state an ample excuse for further repression. Denmark just passed a law (ahead of the Copenhagen Conference) which allows for the PREVENTIVE detention of protestors who 'may engage in criminal activity down the line'. This, in effect, squashes ANY dissent from the outset. If this is not totalitarian, then I don't what is...
