Part 1 of 2 | In a race that has gone down in swimming folk law, 22 year old Kieren Perkins wins the 1500m Freestyle, from lane 8, at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games | After just scraping into the final, Perkins dominates the field to win in a time of 14:56.40 | Team mate Daniel Kowalski takes the silver in a time of 15:02.43 | Perkins won this same event also at the 1992 Olympics, and finished 2nd at the 2000 Sydney Games | This footage has been taken from a Channel 7 Australia broadcast | If this is a breach of copyright please advise and it will be removed

I remember watching this - i was working at the time and TV's were everywhere in the shopping centre. I remember people stopping and crowding around the TV's to watch him win in complete silence and awe. I thought he may win it even though he barely made the final. I cried when he won. A magic moment in Australian Sport. Grant Hackett never had the same sort of effect or love from the public like Perkins did IMO Pure guts and determination - a true sporting legend.

Kieren Perkins brought distance swimming to a different level, 2 time Olympic champion is not bad either.

I remember seeing this on TV early one Saturday morning back in 1996. Damn if I didn't get the feeling all along that he would win. I wish I had put money on my gut feeling.
