French President visits India during Republic Day

And in India, the French President attended the Republic Day parade this weekend. He was in India to strengthen relations between the two countries, and was the guest of honor at the annual parade. Here's more:

STORY:
French President Nicolas Sarkozy joined thousands of spectators at the military procession on Saturday. Amidst parading elephants, camels, and tanks, Sarkozy had the best seat in the show, right between the Indian President and Prime Minister.

But not everyone was celebrating. Every year, various rebel groups call for the boycott of India's Republic Day and other holidays. They also carry out attacks on security forces and government buildings to protest India's founding as a republic.

In India's chaotic northeast, separatist rebels called for a 24-hour general strike to protest what they say is a "forceful occupation of their land by New Delhi".

Separatists in Kashmir also called for a general strike to mark what they call a "black day." And policemen and soldiers in Kashmir frisked pedestrians and bus passengers while patrolling the streets.

Meanwhile in Chhattisgarh, the centre of India's Maoist insurgency, thousands of extra police were deployed after a large arms cache was discovered last week.
