I was discussing your dilemma about some black people not wanting to hear that gay and black rights movements have any commonalities.
He told me that is why he has no interest in fighting for the rights of groups; instead he believes in fighting for individual rights. Instead of the right for gay people or interracial couples to marry, how about the right for any consenting adults to marry?
By moving away from group politics, you avoid this "us and them" mentality. This made sense to me!
In the quote in the sidebar, hasn't she just omitted one word: "what you're _____ about"? "saying"? "implying"? Admittedly, it's a critical omission...
It's all fine and well to try and influence the "fence sitter" but I think I'd make an effort to be aware of when their rhetoric is purposefully designed more to upset you than it is to advance the cause of their argument. If you decide that their words are designed for that purpose it may be better to just move the discussion to a different playing field with a more fair minded group of players.
Scott, I always got the impression that intelligent response to pigheaded rantings was indeed not to affect the pighead, but others who may be listening. Good to see I was on to something.
Oh--and the Yahtzee!/Pepsi can example has to be the BEST summary of idiotic arguments I have ever heard. Bravo.
Are you sure she wasn't talking to you in "jive"? You should edjumicate yourself on the complexities of how to speak and understand jive.
