The Strathroy United Church choir perform God so Loved the World from Sir John Stainer's The Crucifixion on March 30, 2008. Choir Director Edith Hanselman accompanies on the organ.

Sir John Stainer (London, 6 June 1840 -- Verona, 31 March 1901) was an English composer and organist whose music, though not greatly admired today, was much performed during his lifetime. His work as choir trainer and organist, however, set standards for Anglican church music which are still influential. He was also active as an academic, becoming professor of music at Oxford University in 1889. According to Peter Charlton's Stainer biography, Arthur Sullivan's tribute to Stainer was blunt and memorable: "He is a genius".

  • This is a difficult anthem to do well and your choir did a fine job. One positive suggestion and that is move the few men in your choir down directly to the front of the choir, on either side of the middle isle. When there are as few men as you have, this will work wonders in the overall sound and balance. May I suggest too juggling around some of the ladies as well to perhaps balance out the sound as well. There a few "individual" voices and this will correct this. Good Luck Keep Singing.

  • bravo

  • @rmrjg4 u r SO wrong!

  • wrong chord at 0:39, the "who" of whosoever

  • sir john stainer is my reletive im Eli stainer :3

  • I think they did a wonderful job for non-professional singers. Stainer's work sounds deceptively easy, and for that reason is often not done well because people think they can sing it just any old way.

  • i thought this piece was unaccompanied?

  • i think sir john stainer comes from the finest stock with fine selective breeding as i am a stainer myself and soon to be lord.

  • I believe it is the music itself that was crucified

  • I love the harmony on this
