Natalie Cole on the Arsenio Hall Show singing "The Man With the Child In His Eyes"

Such a great arrangement of this classic Kate Bush song.

What I love about this video is Natalie could have done one of her own songs but chose to do a song she had never even recorded - how many artists would pass up a chance to promote themselves and just do something they love? Way to go Natalie.

The beginning is missing because I wasn't aware Natalie was going to do a Kate song so as it started and I heard what she was singing, I had to scramble to grab a tape and get it into the VCR and start it. I'm glad I could get at least this much.

Reminds me of performers who sing the national anthem at major sporting events and add 10,000 FREAKIN notes!!! Oh! Yeah! They also drag it on for twice the time it should take to sing the original. Skip this and listen to Kate Bush sing the original. Notice how subtle Kate handles the vocals. The power of the song is in it's simplicity.

I don't think comparing Natalie with Kate Bush makes any sense. When you take a song from one genre to the next, the delivery and vocal interpretation will ALWAYS be different. I for one, love Natalie's version. Maybe it's because I'm "black."

@JohanR888 yeah i think you have to be a bit into eccentricities if youre gonna like kates quirky music. But from what ive witnessed 90% of kate fans seem to have asperger syndrome hahaha. Check out the documentary "Come Back Kate". Its specifically about her fans, and boy are they freaky.......

all the kate fans need to chill out. Im here because of Kate, but i have to give props to this rendition. I honestly cant find anything wrong with it, and i consider myself a tough critic.

The point of a cover is to bring yourself to it. A Kareoke version would try to ape Kate. Natalie has the talent to take on this song and make it her own. Stop listening for Kate and you'll appreciate it for what it is...a homage.

She gives high praise to Kate in this interview and songs are about interpretation. They are not locked in to only be performed by the people who sang them first.
