It's strange how people like to think that in this era of time we are more civilized than we were a 2 centuries ago or even 4-5 centuries ago. We still wage war, we still have famine and plauge, we stil have tyrants, we still have slavery, and we are still mostly controled by religion. Yeah we may have become more sophisticated as far as technology, but when it's used to destroy others it is no less barbarous than when people realized arrowhead could be used in war.
