The overnight train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai is a very enjoyable trip. The train is comfortable enough (2nd class AC sleeper) and still has that sense of a 'journey' about it.
Book your tickets a couple of days before.from the 'Advance Bookings' office just to the rear of the right hand side of the enterance to the platforms.
Get to Hua Lamphong station before 6pm to watch the national anthem being played.
How many hour is this? 20 hours? How was it?

From memory, each carriage has a Western style toilet available plus 2 or 3 hand basins and mirror but no shower.

I bought my tix about 1 hr before train left. The train ride was fine. Slept fine. But was woken by the annoying lady selling "ORAN JOOTH". Oh. And NEVER eat the food on the train, it's overpriced and godawful!!! I had what was supposed to be some kind of breakfast, and almost puked. Load up on BBQ and beer at one of the vendors on the platform.

Ahh yes .... the old Orang Jooth.
I agree about the food. I bought some BBQ Chicken from a vendor on one of the platforms - it was great.
