Julian Bream performs Mauro Giulani's "Le Rossiniane," Op. 121. I created this video from the LP by the same title, RCA Red Seal, serial number ARL1-0711, issued in 1974. Le Rossiniane work was written in the early 1820s, and Bream's was the first recording of it.
Part 1 of 2
The March, 1975 edition of Gramophone Magazine wrote of this LP:
"On this record Julian Bream juxtaposes works by two leading nineteenth-century guitar composers; Mauro Giuliani and the Spaniard Fernando Sor. Neither could be called great composers but they were both good professional composers who knew how to extract every scrap of musical effect from the guitar, being also virtuoso guitarists. Side 1 is devoted to both Le rossiniane, two of six works bearing the same name, being arrangements and variations on themes by Rossini which Giuliani wrote in Rome in the early 1820s. This is the first recording of these works which are conceived in a frankly brilliant style, employing every device known to Giuliani which could be relied on to impress captivate and even startle an audience. Giuliani was a virtuoso and it takes a virtuoso to perform these works. Bream plays them with immense panache and astounding effect. I doubt very much that Giuliani's audiences heard them played better—or even as well."
