Charlotte, NC's The Poor Souls bill themselves as the "Bad Boys of Beach Music" when, in truth, the one time I met them, they were as gracious as they could possibly be. But that was years ago during the 1970's when I accidentally encountered this local group at a hotel lounge in Burlington, NC. I had no idea who I was about to listen to, but I recall being very pleasantly surprised at the performance I saw, especially the vocal skills of this group. The Poor Souls have changed personnel many times through the years, but 3 of the members, Bobby Smith (the bass voice), Butch Stone (the tenor) and Roger Smith (the baritone) have remained constant since 1967. "Brazil" was their first hit single, but they had many to follow, and now are members of the Carolina Beach Music Hall of Fame. They regularly perform still today, and if you book the right cruise line, you might even catch them on board.

  • Great piece. Thank you for posting. One I play on my radio program, The Group Harmony Alley on WFDU-FM out of Teaneck, NJ

  • Bobby was a great guy...RIP brother

  • @AnitaLife27 I have the portion of Charlie Brown's Beach Show that was a tribute to Bobby if you'd like to have it.

    Thanks for the info!

  • @BeachMusicLvr Hello. Many people have done this great song. It was from 1939. My favorite version is the doo wop by the Coasters, but many people did it before that, including Sinatra. Classic! Hope this is helpful. It's called: Aquarela do Brasil, according to Wikipedia.

  • @RChop Remake? Who did the original?

  • This is fantastic! Thank you so much for posting it.

  • Great remake. Heard it on the "surf"94.9 while on vacation last week in Myrtle Beach. Actually thought it was them singing with the Coasters.
