Mario Lanza VALENTINE'S DAY tribute!
'If I Loved You'(Rodgers-Hammerstein). Recorded February 22, 1952, for The Mario Lanza Show, with studio orchestra conducted by Ray Sinatra.
Perhaps a Mario Lanza Valentine's Day tribute is a cheesy idea, but at least there are plenty of great songs to choose from. I think that few would quibble with my selection: Rodgers' and Hammerstein's immortal 'If I Loved You' from "Carousel", in a breathtaking Lanza performance.
Few classically-trained singers have been able to move successfully between opera and the Great American Songbook, but Lanza does so effortlessly. His phrasing is utterly natural, instinctive, and unforced, yet full of nuance. And his obvious enthusiasm and sincerity convince the listener of the rightness of almost every musical gesture. Combined with that incredible voice, these elements make Lanza's legacy of popular song an enduring, ever-inviting musical treasure.

No one sang with such heart as he did, he put everything into his songs. When I hear them I think of lost loves and the one person I would have given my life for! She will always be the love of my life! and may God bless her!!

His voice always stirs my heart unbelievably! And his face always is truly eye candy for women. BTW, that first picture in this song is wonderful. Never saw it before. His face is perfect.

This is absolutely beautiful. Mario sang with passion and I never stop thinking of how cruel life is to take this man from us. Everything about him was terrific. I miss him but appreciate being able to see him and listen to him on YouTube. Thank you so much.

Mario sang from the soles of his feet to the top of his head. The man was plagued by self doubt, drink and weight problems. But he always gave all he had for his audience. Rest in peace, Maestro!
