Hi Jeff, can you explain more about the last portion of this video, something about taking the break away from the center of the cup??? can you expand on that?
@jaxfl2 That's my point jax, Looking at the hole doesn't mean you're looking at your target. I disagree with your belief that you can't line up the logo that accurately. It just has to be more accurate than what most people do, which is aiming at an intermediate target. I've done alignment tests with lasers and for me, at least, aligning a line on the ball works very well.
There's a reason that practically no pro looks at the hole or target when putting.
@larrybud Actually, I've found hitting off center on my putter is not the problem you'd expect. Experiment a bit. And, lining up a logo or line on the ball just gets you close to your target. To make a 20' putt you have to aim to within two-tenths of a degree. You can't do that with a line or a logo. Finally, I hope you have a target for your breaking putts. It's not the hole, but there is a target. Often you can calculate exactly where the target should be.
@jaxfl2 Hitting a ball 1/2" off center of the putter face is a big miss, and will cause you to miss putts. A center strike is of utmost importance in making putts. There's no reason to look at the hole since lining up the putt is a static. IOW, you have the advantage of lining up a logo on the ball (or a line) to your target line, and can set the putter face and body square to that line.
On top of that, only 4% of putts are straight, so 96% of the time the hole isn't your target anyway.
@larrybud I respectfully disagree. A baseball player has a 90 degree field to be successful. In putting, you have to be far more accurate - less than a degree for 10 foot putts. It's very difficult to hit a curving baseball going 90 mph. It's not hard to hit a golf ball on the green. Hope you aren't having trouble with that. It is just sitting there motionless. The hole is your target.
@jaxfl2 That's because the trigger isn't your target. When putting, the ball *is* your target. Do batters look at the spot on the field they want to hit the ball? Of course not, they look at the ball.
I tried putting while looking at the hole for a season...I found that on short putts it was good but on lags and breaking putts it causes you to push or pull the ball at the hole rather than the line away from the hole that breaks it in the cup.
@grimo000 Oh no! I didn't say that. You CAN'T look at the target with a driver or iron. You wouldn't be able to hit the ball with those clubs. And, you need to stand perpendicular to the line to get power into the swing. Putting is different. There's no problem (in the putting part of the game) hitting the ball without looking at the ball. And, you don't need much power. Face the hole and focus on the target. Your body will learn to follow what your eyes see.
@jaxfl2 so your saying when you hit a drive you should be looking down the fairway whilst your making your swing. name one pro that looks at the hole whilst making a swing
