@RcUniverseGuy ...Johnson recorded it in the late 30s....but I'm sure the song is older....Most COGIC gospel songs were versions of older spirituals and hymns pretty much until Georgia Tom gave up the blues and became Thomas A. Dorsey, the father of gospel music, and started writing.

"Blind" Willie Johnson (January 22, 1897 – September 18, 1945) wrote this tune. Wonderful slide guitar with a great original melody. Search for it on YouTube to hear. While you're at it listen to his other authentic blues tunes such as "Motherless Children."

No knock against Nina Simone but she took all the bluesy edge off the original and discarded its great melody as well. Willie should've gone for original.
