  • Such a shame; his cancer is obviously interfering with his performance at this point (albeit, he was rather prone to frequent mistakes nonetheless). I think the Allen and Rodgers both sounded like crap. It was the 80s. It happens.

And, on that note, he seems to be missing some of the ornamentation, which is a little bit disappointing. I do, however, like some of his characteristic artistry at the 5:35 mark, which is kosher, because the French expected that unusual interpretation way back when.

  • Actually it was the late 70's. He died in 1980.

  • Man has amazing pedalling technique!

  • go Virgil!

  • @FirstMrTornado Tempos rise in live performance because of the emotion of the moment. Makes no difference if it's Classical or Rock concerts. It's one of the reasons some performers use metronomes or click tracks. Click tracks show no emotion, but the miss out on the fun.

  • @willowthebored Even with the cancer, No one I know could play the way he could. Especially with his awsome memory to just know all these pieces without music. Trur, the organ itself was a product of the 80's, but Virgil will be with us always.

  • For those who choose to be critical...could you do it better with such spirit and excitement when you are living with terminal cancer as he was? The Allen sounds quite splendid...even on this poor recording. Thank goodness we have these clips to remember one of (if not THE) greatest organist of all time?!!! Thank you Shandy Hall!!!

  • @ShandyHall Glad you corrected this person. This guy sounds like a "purist", whining about the imperfections in someone else's performance.

  • I have the music for this piece in his book "At the Organ with Virgil Fox". I think he's playing this piece way too fast in this performance. When I practice this piece, I take it considerably slower and give plenty more expression to the individual variations. He really should have played this significantly slower.

  • and he just carries on regardless, total pro!

  • @ShandyHall

Truth. Freudian slip, I was looking at an '82 three-man Allen while I was listening to this. XD
