It is often a misconception that Buddhism is a religion, actually it is not. It is the Science of the Mind. If a buddhist give reverence to Buddha it is not worshiping it is giving respect, much like a person respect his teacher, parents or a dear friend. You can learn from Buddha's teachings and test /practice them, learning is like walking a narrow road with open and knowing eyes.

Another misconception about Buddhism is that buddha was a person - the "buddha" was actualy Guatama Sidhartah. According to Buddhism - we all have innate buddha nature. Most of us are just sleeping buddhas. Enlightenment is to what waking up from a dream is.
