Written in 1919 by Ernest R. Ball and J. Keirn Brennan.

Is the struggle and strife we find in this life
Really worth while, after all
I've been wishing today I could just run away
Out where the west winds call

With someone like you, a pal good and true
I'd like to leave it all behind and go and find
Some place that's known to God alone
Just a spot to call our own
We'll Find perfect peace, where joys never cease
Out there beneath a kindly sky
We'll build a sweet little nest somewhere in the west
And let the rest of the world go by

  • @keithbenjones You're welcome, God bless you as well!

  • Thankyou to Messrs Ball and Brennan for compiling this.

Thank you also for posting this.

Our elderly next door neighbour used to sing this to us from his kitchen door when I was young.

    Fond memories.

  • @ronrumble41 You're welcome, thanks for your comment!

  • Thanks for posting this. My grandma passed just passed away, and this was one of her favorite songs. We are printing a handout with her picture and the lyrics to this song to hand out at the visitation. Listening to the lyrics was a big help for accuracy, but emotionally, too!

  • You're welcome, I am sorry to hear about your loss.

  • My mum used to hum it while she was cookin in the kitchen

  • An oldie but memories of wonderful afternoons dancing and singing while my mum played the piano and sang.

  • This was the song my dad sang to my mom on their first date.

  • my mother's all-time favorite song written in 1919. It's beautiful. They played it in the film "Out Of Africa" I like the way you sing it and INCLUDE THE VERSE. Thank you.

  • I was also looking for this song to put on my grandma's funeral program.. She passed away last night at age 99 - an incredible woman of God, teacher and pianist. The use of the piano in this song sounded just like her! Thank you
