Beginning in the fall of 2011, Pikeville College students will have an opportunity to pursue a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm D) degree offered through Midway College.

President Paul E. Patton and Midway College President William B. Drake Jr. announced the partnership during a press conference Sept. 8. The presidents signed an agreement to establish a guaranteed acceptance program. Midway College School of Pharmacy will reserve up to ten spots in each recruiting class for guaranteed admission to students enrolled in Pikeville College's three-year pre-pharmacy curriculum; however, all Pikeville students are welcome to apply and additional students may be admitted.

"We are very excited to offer this new program to our students," said President Paul Patton. "Our partnership with Midway College adds another component to the quality educational opportunities Pikeville College provides. We believe this new offering will generate significant interest on our campus."

Midway College's School of Pharmacy is set to open in August 2011 and will enroll up to 80 students per year in the four-year program. The school will be temporarily located on the Mayo Campus of the Big Sandy Regional and Technical Center in Paintsville.

"More than a decade ago, when we introduced the Pikeville College School of Osteopathic Medicine, our goal was to provide much-needed healthcare to the people of Appalachia," said Patton. "It was our belief that if we educated doctors from the region, once they completed their education, they would remain here. It was a bold move -- becoming Kentucky's third medical school -- but we have graduated more than 600 physicians and our program has earned high marks nationally in rural medicine. I believe Midway College's School of Pharmacy will yield the same good results."

"We too are focused on providing more educational opportunities for Kentuckians," added Dr. Drake. "Our state is rich with talented students and we believe it is our duty to offer the highest level of education to those students who wish to remain here for their studies and to serve the communities where they grew up once they graduate. We see this as a win-win for our two institutions, the region and the Commonwealth of Kentucky."

Pikeville College is an independent, four-year liberal arts and sciences college in the heart of central Appalachia. Founded in 1889 by Presbyterian ministers seeking to provide educational opportunities for mountain youth, the college has played an integral role in the educational, economic and cultural development of its service area for more than a century. Recently ranked as one of the top 20 medical schools in the nation in rural medicine by U.S. News & World Report, the Pikeville College School of Osteopathic Medicine was established in 1997 to provide men and women with an osteopathic medical education that emphasizes primary care, encourages research, promotes lifelong scholarly activity and produces graduates who are committed to serving the health care needs of communities in Eastern Kentucky and other Appalachian regions.

Midway College, a multi-dimensional Baccalaureate and Master's Degree granting institution, was founded in 1847 as the first school in the United States to serve orphaned and disadvantaged students. Over the years Midway College has expanded its mission to serve both men and women through its women's college, school for career development, online college, and graduate school. Midway College has four Kentucky campus locations -- Midway, Lexington, Radcliff and Paintsville. In addition it offers other programs in partnership with KCTCS throughout Central and Eastern Kentucky.
