Messerschmitt Sachs 191cc engine running

This is a Sachs 191cc engine from a Messerschmitt KR200 or KR201 shown running on a test bed. The engine is shown starting and charging in both directions. This type of Sachs engine is pretty unique in that it can run in both directions, forward and back and this is used instead of a reverse gear. It is possible to use all 4 gears when the engine is reversed and reverse as quickly as you can go in the forward direction. In practice, the car is very unstable travelling in reverse and many Schmitts have been rolled by doing this!
