There's a timer in the electrical outlet that the feeder is plugged into. You program the timer to turn on (& dispense food) and off (stop dispensing food) as often and as long as you want (per feeding). There's a corkscrew mechanism inside the shaft that pushes the food out as it falls down from the reservoir above. The food is supposed to fall down into the sloped dish but Pep never lets it get that far (prefers to get the kibble directly from the chute).
