The second part in a three part production focusing on Caribbean and Latino culture in New York City.
SENTIMIENTO presents two drummers who are also members of the transplanted (from West Africa) Orisha religion, also known as Ocha. They introduce a bit of its history and then look into how New York as a melting pot has affected the religion.

  • @chsn09 I took a class on the specific history of the DR. I thought Haiti was a gem; ooh boy how amazed I was. Trujillo, indio, Manifest destiny. Is there any other country with such a massive identity crisis? unfortunately, yes.

So if Hispanic/Latino is a derogatory term how do I stay clear of offending any of my people? Dominican, Puerto Rican, Nicarguan etc is where its at right?

  • @chsn09 wow thats the exact same point the youths make it my KUSHITE HEIGHTS video. That America is setting a standard and a substandard paradigm by calling some plain American but others AFRICAN-American or AMERICAN-Indian. If thats the notion and if we are to believe that all people are equal, then why aren't some people officially recognized as Irish-American while I, who does not consider myself American at all, is dumped into that category.

  • @chsn09 I am a Black Jamaican. I came to NY to live for college a few years back so a lot of what I felt was a normal way of life was a 'sub-culture' in NY. For example these young men, I love NY because you will find everything here but on the other hand when presenting this short and the paper that went with it I was told many times that I was dealing with a 'sub-culture'. Whats that telling me, that one culture is dominant and full and another is just sub or half assed

  • @beautyfullone01 I will send you the documentary

  • @beautyfullone01 NOT ALL, but many Dominicans are known for denying or not realizing that they too are of African descent because they speak Spanish and can call themselves "Hispanic/Latino" and they too are also West Indians, Caribbean, Antilleans.

Hispanic and Latino are simply used as synonymous terms referring strictly to Spanish speaking populations.

  • @beautyfullone01 The term Latino/Hispanic is an oppressive racist, bias, and discriminatory term with in its implication and context of usage in the USA and it's used incorrectly.

A lot of people don't think that they are of African descent or Native American descent when they come to the USA because they speak the Spanish language.

  • @beautyfullone01 Well the whole term Latin, Hispanic, Latino are flawed ones because why doesn't the USA use terms like Anglo/Brittanic or Germanic for people that are from English speaking cultures? Much of the things that are called "Latin(o)" or "Hispanic" in the USA are actually African and/or indigenous(Native American) in its origins.

  • @beautyfullone01 What is your background? Where are you from? Well the USA is a nation that is based on English and Spanish and English historically have been enemies and given the mentality that a lot of White Americans(USA) have and imposed on others they took the Anglo antagonism against anything Hispano or Spanish and when they dealt with people from Spanish speaking nations they attached colorism, hate, racism, and discrimination against them in the context further of anti-Hispanicism.

  • @chsn09 got the name of that documentary by chance?

  • @chsn09 1 of the things that first weirded me out when i moved to U.S was the question on nearly every form that says "Do you consider yourself Hispanic?" I found it extremely random couldnt understand why that was there. Why didnt it say "do you consider yourself Caribbean/East African/Eastern European etc etc" Im still not sure why its there. Do you have any insight as to why this is such a big issue for the U.S gov. Is it because 'illegal alien' is stereotypically synonymous with 'Mexican'?
