There are theaters that serve a butter-flavored topping that isn't a true diary product but is basically flavored soybean oil.
And there are theaters that serve clarified butter, which is concentrated butter that doesn't need to be kept cold.

There are no trans fats in butter. It has cholesterol, but that's not the same as trans fatty acids.
You're thinking of margarine, which is made by hydrogenating vegetable oil and that's a terrible topping for popcorn anyways as melted margarine makes popcorn soggy and gross.
Butter, on the other hand, is a true diary product made by churning and fermenting milk or cream. Melted butter will not make popcorn soggy and complements popcorn flavor perfectly, like butter and corn-on-the-cob.
