How to change outboard motor gearbox Oil is a quick video on servicing your gearbox on your outboard. This video shows how easy it is for somone to do themselves. All gearboxes work on the same principle and should be similar for four stroke and two stroke gearboxes.
I don't claim to be an expert, so please forgive me if not 100% technically correct, but does the job and can save you some money on servicing costs. I recommend using your manufacturers oil for your outboard motor, and your local dealer will have this and also you can buy a small pump and fitting suitable for your outboard. It's just a matter of draining the oil from your gearbox, by releasing the top and bottom bung. Attach your pump, and change the oil by pumping from the bottom, until the oil flows from the top bung hole. This ensures no air pockets in the gearbox or your oil. Ensure bungs are tightly screwed back in place. Just check your seals on your bungs and change regularly to ensure a good seal. Too easy and your Oil is changed. Do this as per manufacturers recommendation, or I like to do every 100 hours, Costs very little to do this oil change, our little 40 HP Yamaha 4 stroke, only used probably half a litre of oil.
Also another job and worth doing when changing your gearbox oil, is to take off your prop and check for fishing line or braid wrapped around your prop shaft, this will eventually cut into your gearbox seal and let water into your gearbox and oil, and if not detected, will destroy your gearbox real fast. Put a bit of grease on your prop shaft at the same time. Just takes a few minutes.
Please subscribe and rate, with new helpful videos on changing fuel filters, etc coming. A bit more work on our little project boat and we'll be back into the fishing in no time.

Is it OK to lose a few milliliters before you get the bottom screw in?

Isn't a problem, you fill up from the bottom of your gearbox, and you don't get any air then, and wiith the top bung done up you get an airlock which prevents the oil from draining out. Be as quick as possible putting the bottom bung in on the outboard leg and you should only lose a minimal amount which won't affect your gearbox.

Hello,
I like this video, but I'm have a hell of a time when 87 Yamaha just started it up today Jane.all the mission coils. But is doing the same thing as last year runs only with the choke wide open or partially closed. I did a compression check today. All cylinders are 95 PSI or 98 PSI in that range.
I bought it online three years ago have not been able to get it to run. Still, it will not idle for longer than a few minutes then it dies need your help in this matter. Thank you

Check your fuel or spark plugs aren't gummed up, Can't be too major, take it in to your local outboard yamaha motor dealer and sure they'll be able to sort it out. Good luck!!
