Painted Lady Caterpillar Making Chrysalis

When we got back from lunch we discovered that we caught the caterpillar making the chysalis! The students were in awe! If you don't want to watch the whole thing (but really, it's pretty cool!), scroll to the end and listen to the comments the kids make! The kids named this caterpillar Frederick -- they are just too fun! It was an exciting day in first grade!

Yes, the yellow stuff is their food.....malva leaves I believe.

The one on the left had not made their chrysalis yet. It's resting and waiting. :)

Is this in real time or is it time lapsed? I have Painted Lady caterpillars that are extremely close to forming their chrysalis' and I was wondering how long the actual process from full grown caterpillar to chrysalis takes.

Simply amazng one of the smallest and most delicate of God's creations. Simply amazing how it sheds it skin to make a chrysalis that will protect it like a force field. I am waiting for my Painted Ladies to open in about 10 days (smile)
