Lionel (Coalition of Immmokalee Workers) and Marc (Student-Farmworker Alliance) are interviewed by United Students Against Sweatshops (Southern Illinois University Edwardsville) at a demonstration at the Chipotle in University City, St. Louis, MO.
Chipotle's marketing slogan is "Food with Integrity," but they continue to buy tomatoes from farms that pay sub-poverty wages, based on output. The CIW demands 1 penny more/pound to increase their wages, and they have found targeting restaurants' marketing image is the most effective way for them. This campaign has been successful with Taco Bell (the famous "Boot the Bell" campaign), Burger King, McDonald's, and recently, Whole Foods; all of these companies have complied, telling Yum! Foods that they only want tomatoes picked from farms that pay workers the specified wage.
Chipotle and Subway have refused to comply. Thus, the CIW, the SFA, United Students Against Sweatshops, and other community activists organized a demonstration at the Chipotle restaurant on Delmar, in St. Louis, MO, as part of the larger "Chipocrisy Tour" of the CIW.
