  • While I can agree wholeheartedly that this interpretation is lacking the power, might and utter conviction that Bruckner is known for, it is important to note that this indeed is a Youth Orchestra. Granted, I must say that the emphasis of phrases is absolutely horrendous in this; that doesn't change the fact that this is a glorious performance for students. They should be proud, and use this as learning experience.

  • @Strefanasha Bruckner's 9th is not a german &in the broader cultural sense including austria) romantic symphony.

It is a testimony and testament of faith in the Holy and Terrible, the Living God, If this is not brought out IMO they waste their time playing it.

to hear my favourite symphony so misunderstood by any conductor is a painful experience, it would be even worse if I had to play it, as when i did Bruckner's 4th, and the conductor wanted SUGAR.

  • I'm sorry, but i must strongly dispute this conductor's rendition of this symphony. at 26:24 when I heard Giulini do it I felt something akin to vertigo, but not so here. I hear no sense of Great Yahweh, Holy and Terrible, thundering from the heights. There is no mysterium tremendum here either (google the term, you will find some fascinating stuff).

it is all too fast, and skates over the notes.

the best Brucknerian IMO is Celibidache, and Giulini's 9th is a masterpiece.

  • @Strefanasha Yes, based on his own words, he had definitely wanted it to end triumphantly and majestically, with a choral of praise. I think the Mazzuca coda comes close, but I can't wait to hear the all-new finale which Simon Rattle will perform at Carnegie Hall in February!

  • By Gum!! they breed good bass players in germany!!

I just wonder if these young people know in their guts what this symphony is about: i mean about God Almighty, The HOLY AND TERRIBLE. This last is why Bruckner is my adored favourite composer. But then I did not even begin to make sense of him till I was 25, and then too old to play in youth orcxhestras

  • @jonathanaconway yes it is , seeing as there are now good performing versions of it, and ending on an adagio was TOTALLY against Bruckner's artistic convictions

  • Blomstedt leads this orchestra's young members very nicely!

Bruckner's textures are well elaborated, and sounds naturally.

  • Stupendous rather..

  • Mind boggling stuff.

  • INCREDIBLE!!! Fantastic YOUNG orchestra!
