In my opinion, this is one of the most exciting races of all time. Brought to you by prexemplar.com

  • However he was a great distance runner. He did not bow down to racing logic he ran out front flat out until he had nothing left. That was the way he ran. Yes technically it was stupid, but it was prideful. No one should mock Lasse viren, or discredit his accomplishments. If anything he is certainly accomplished. However you should now mock someone that died so tragically at such a young. These arguements are childish. Rest in peace Steve Prefontaine you are missed.

  • @Viren4Pre0 I say again... where are you getting this "proof" from?

  • Wonderful race... go Pre go!!!

  • @BigTrailRunner And how do you come up with THAT bullshit?!?!?

  • Wow. What a debate between who was the best middle distance runner Steve Prefontaine, or Lasse Viren. Both were proven atheletes one died far to young, and the other proved why he was an Olympic champion. Honestly no debate holds ground, and never will. Neither one of them are the greatest distance runners of all times. Do you know why? Neither one of them currently hold any world records. Americans love Steve Prefontaine because he had heart. He was not supposed to be a great distance runner.

  • Nothing dirty in Gammoudi either. As far as we can tell, this was a fair race with the best winning, the second getting the silver, and the third the bronze. Simple enough.

  • @woosung58 No, Viren never admitted to blood doping. Morever, he achieved excellent results during an extended period in 1972, which is not easily explainable as resulting from blood doping, whose effects do not last that long, as far as I know.

  • Gammoudi was a dirty racer

  • @fastmover564 Actually, didn't Viren admit to 'blood' doping? Not forbidden at the time, I believe, but is now. Don't know why the title says 'Prefontaine', though...surely Viren was the star. GB had high hopes of Bedford... but races weren't his thing. Stewart, third here, was part of a family of good runners...had a sister and brother also world class.
