This is a common technique that is used a mesquite control. A thin layer of oil(in this case, vegetable oil) is placed over the body of water holding the mosquito larva. The larva cannot reach the surface to breath and suffocate. Note: I did not like doing this. I actually felt bad for the larva as I did this. I did not find any enjoyment in doing this and uploaded it for educational purposes. I would also like to note the this is still more humane than poring them out to dry, or spraying them with pesticides.
