Just an FYI, the top of the PS3 is always cool; it's just a cover. The hardware is all on the bottom, which is where it mostly overheats as well as the back end. Other than that, you're right about needing sufficient air flow for the fans to work properly. Definitely don't allow the vents to be blocked on either side.
