"Ferry 'Cross The Mersey," by Gerry and the Pacemakers, from the movie of the same name. Released in late 1964 in the UK and in 1965 in the US, it was a hit on both sides of the Atlantic, reaching #6 in the US and charting twice in the UK.

Lyrics:

Life goes on day after day
Hearts torn in every way

So ferry 'cross the Mersey
'cause this land's the place I love
and here I'll stay

People they rush everywhere
Each with their own secret care

So ferry 'cross the Mersey
and always take me there
The place I love

People around every corner
They seem to smile and say
We don't care what your name is boy
We'll never turn you away

So I'll continue to say
Here I always will stay

So ferry 'cross the Mersey
'cause this land's the place I love
and here I'll stay
and here I'll stay
Here I'll stay

  • I've been on this ferry..this song brings the magical Mersey back to me..I love it and I love Liverpool <3

  • Thank you, we sent my Dad on his final journey from the ferry after loosing him 12 years ago today. As I can't get to ride the ferry at least I can be there in spirit. He loved merseybeat.

  • greatest place in the world, you want to arrive at the beatles weekend, over 300,0000 people come from all over the world for the 3 day event...could'nt meet more friendlier people!!!

  • Even now, people still get confused about the title. He's telling the ferry to cross the Mersey. So it's Ferry cross the Mersey, not Ferry across the Mersey.

  • I've been in Liverpool some years ago and it felt like home. The ferrys on the mersey played this song! I hope, I can go there again some time...

  • @trickstick84 I remembered afterwards; I had the film on VHS and "unofficially!" had a dvd copy made (very poor condition). I don't think it's out on a commercial dvd.

  • @RFO1962 Lis Sladen once said in an interview: "This was the worst thing I have ever appeared in. We spent 3 days on the ferry going backwards and forwards, until I was green with sea-sickness! Three of us were picked out to stand at the front and turn round to look at Gerry. I went to see it at the cinema with my parents, and I thought my career would end there and then ! I hope it's not out on DVD - I hope it's been destroyed !

  • @trickstick84 She is! But how did you know? She's not credited on the film (I have this on DVD).
