what is so artistic about a well drawn composition? What impression does a technically well made drawing, painting, or sculpture place on the audience? Why would I spend time painting the still life when I photograph it? Wouldn't the idea be to make the impression you seek for your audience?

This might as well be The School of the Art Institute in Chicago, but this work is good by comparison!

I find a lot of fine art to be a joke. The fact that enough garbage is sincerely indulged taints all of it. Hipsters are the worst when it comes to art.

@RubiconXing Woh, no need to get huffy. Calm down. I wasn't saying everyone is full of shit. This movie obviously exaggerates what one would experience in real art school. But when someone puts minimal effort into an assignment and uses a bunch of "deep" B.S. terminology about the "process" and this and that to try to cover it up...yeh, that's B.S. Sorry.

lol wow I didn't mean it literally. It's not like I watched this film and suddenly thought "Oh art school is going to suck" It's sitting through years of this kind of bullshit in my other art classes with their so called "critiques" of others' works (similar to ones shown here) that I finally got fed up with it. Art is something I enjoy and discuss with others. Strong enough to make it? Give me a break.

@RubiconXing I'm SO sure RISD doesn't produce ANY bad students. har har. Seriously, if you haven't seen anybody produce bad art in art school and/ or B.S. their way through a crit, then I wonder about your credibility. And your banner, "Let me be evil!!!" kind of sums your maturity up in a nut shell.

@sergeantshroom I agree with you. Top art schools aren't like this. If you do hear BS, it's probably because the kid was busy working hard for another class and just didn't care to pull a full all-nighter. Or they're having a breakdown. Or they feel lost. It can be a number of things. People's art evolves differently, and develops in its own time.
-
@coralin378 That's sad, if this film put you off the idea. Perhaps you wouldn't have been strong enough to get through it anyway.
-
@TheSawyerpot1 You're in art school to learn. Some people's "bullshit" can be quite genuine. Who are you to judge? They may be at a different stage, trying to learn something beyond technical skill. I'm a huge supporter of strong foundations (Illustration major) but that's not all there is. The people experimenting aren't keeping themselves stagnant -- eventually something may materialize. This film stereotypes, but most students accepted into top art schools aren't full of BS.

@JonBurnsArt Which art schools are you talking about? In my experience RISD is nothing like this; both technical skill and concept are of equal importance. You have to find a balance; you *should* be able to talk about your work. Just as you should be a strong academic student in order to be able to verbalize the reason you're passionate about what you do -- otherwise what are you but an illustrator for hire? Every occupation benefits from connections! Basic fact!
This was totally my experience in Art School. All you can do is laugh inside and enjoy the ride. Anything can be "art" as long as you know how to "talk" smarty about it. Like Andy Warhol said " Art is what you can get away with".
