In 1183 AD, Hovhannes Outman was appointed as the first Armenian abbot in Philippopolis (Plovdiv). In 1675, this parish church of Sourp Kevork (Saint George) was built. It was renovated in its present form in 1828. Under the communists, many Armenian churches were closed, but this particular parish remained open. In the 1950s, Bishop Vazken Baljian was the primate of Bulgaria before being elected Catholicos of All Armenians as Vazken the First. Wonderful posting! Thanks!
