Clean Skies News covers Grid Week, and the speech by Energy Secretary Steven Chu who talks on the three biggest challenges he sees facing a Smart Grid.
PMUs and Synchrophasors (with local SCADA) will enable both software automation and operator visualization of wide area grid operations in real time. Synchrophasers can/would/could provide wide area (across interconnection) data at near 60 cycles per second, including GPS and time stamp. This is a key part of the backbone of the so called "Smart Grid". Efforts such as WECC WISP (Western Interconnection Synchrophasor Project) are helping to make this happen.
