Crashergate: now what?

It was one of the most egregious security breaches in memory, but the Secret Service was quick to assert that President and Mrs. Obama were never in any danger during Tuesday's White House gatecrashing by a pair of pathetic publicity seekers.

Maybe. No thanks to the Secret Service.

The gatecrashers — Michaele and Tareq Salahi — got face time with the president, having waited their turn in a receiving line during a state-dinner reception for Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

That is to say, they got close enough to do some life-threatening damage to Obama — with, say, a ceramic knife or other nonmetallic weapon.

Says Secret Service Director Mark Sullivan: "The agency is deeply concerned and embarrassed."

Not concerned and embarrassed enough for Sullivan to resign for having humiliated the president before the leader of an allied nation of 1.1 billion people — to say nothing of having endangered the lives of both Singh and Obama.

And no doubt Sullivan will still have his job after the smoke clears — and some gate-guard types have been canned.

The fact is, nobody of a certain rank in Washington is ever fired, no matter how egregious the nonfeasance of underlings.

—It's been almost six weeks since a San Diego-to-Minneapolis flight went radio-silent for 77 minutes without anyone alerting the Air Force. Nobody on the ground had the faintest clue who was in the cockpit, or what tall building the aircraft might end up being flown into.

It was a breathtaking violation of post 9/11 procedure, yet FAA head Randy Babbit still has his job, and so does everybody else involved — except the pilots.

—And Army Chief of Staff George Casey is still wearing his four stars — even though it is now clear that just about the only folks who hadn't long known that Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan was an Islamist lunatic were the 13 people he murdered at Fort Hood. And nothing was done about him.

Sullivan of the Secret Service, of course, is the fellow who ties Manhattan into gridlock knots whenever the president comes to town — and nobody really begrudges him that.

But now it turns out that Sullivan can't even keep Obama safe — in his own home.

He has to go. For starters.

Security fell STRAIGHT down on their faces. They just cannot admit it. "Investigation ongoing." Favorite buzz phrase when 'officials' are trying to dodge tough questions. That WHOLE White House has been turned into one BIG joke. This guy is PITIFUL as a Press Secretary. They'll make someone "hang" for it, for sure.
