This is a video of our group, Mark Bielech, Matt Corban and Don Willoughby, demonstrating our trixbox open-source private branch exchange (PBX) system was fully operational and that all the project objectives were completed for the Current Topics: Computer Information Systems (CIS) capstone course at the University of Akron under the instruction of Professor Debra Keller. Some of the objectives we accomplished were:

•Install and configure a basic setup of the trixbox operating system
•Setup and configure basic IP settings and DHCP server
•Setup basic SIP extensions and IP Hardphones
•Configure an analog telephone adapter (ATA)
•Create a wireless network and setup iPhone/iPod Touch extensions
•Setup on hold music
•Setup a wake-up call feature
•Setup ring groups
•Setup interactive voice response menu (IVR)
•Update trixbox via command line
•Hardening and securing trixbox

  • YAY!!! that cisco phone sounds like the phones from 24!

  • this is a very multitasking system to operate..nice.

  • @kblake71 As of right now, I have put my home project on "hold" for the time being (no pun intended) while I'm currently looking for a job. I last left off trying to fine-tune the gain on the fxs extensions. At times they're either too loud and it distorts the sound, or too soft for Asterisk to understand keystrokes into the phones.

  • @markbielech

how is the home project going?

  • @markbielech Awesome, that will be interesting to see. I just started a project as well with trixbox ce. I have it up and running now with Voicepulse SIP trunk. They have a free 30 day trail with some outgoing calls credit. I've been documenting everything and planning on posting videos as well.

  • @sdtarheels In this specific video, we did not use any SIP provider for our project. This was a basic setup of what a small business would use internally, without any connections to the outside world initially. Currently I'm working on my own project that utilizes FREE unlimited US calling with the combination of Google Voice and the SIP provider SIPGate.

  • @markbielech Great, thanks for the info. Can I ask what SIP provider you used? Thanks!

  • @sdtarheels We used some basic Linux security methods. For our project and in this specific example, we secured SSH by creating a new user account, restricting this new user account only to login via SSH (and disabled root access), and changed the default SSH port number of "22" to "2222." There are MANY other forms of securing a trixbox, such as configuring the pre-installed firewall. Many of these security methods can be found online and in trixbox ebooks.
