  • Shouldn't the themes and ideas come after the text? In essense looks like a review of the text should be where your themes and ideas come from.

  • @thegrandutchess The theme is simply the concerns or needs of your congregation...you ask your text to address these concerns...if your text does not address these concerns then you either go find a text that does...or preach other concerns...

    However, finding the needs of your congregation is important...in many cases you will find that your text does address the needs of your congregation...

  • Should the theme come from the text or does the theme dictate the text? If it's the latter how can we be sure to be giving people the full context of scripture and not just are go to lines.

  • @Rexlove1 I know what you are asking, and its a good question. Either one can be used. Sherman Cox has another video answering this exact question. Search for "Sermon Idea or Bible First?" I'll let him answer it for you as it takes about 5 minutes to fully explain them and their benefits.

  • @liltigga2k5 the question is will you acknowledge your pre-understandings or not. All of us go to the text with certain ideas...beliefs...thoughts...w­e disagree that it is posible to go to the Bible without any previous understandings that at least influence our understanding of the text...

    Those who do not even acknowledge this fact are most likely to be overly influenced by it...

    but that is a debate in the Christian world that it appears we are on different sides of...
