Was this the Olympics where the Irish-American shot putter whispered to the team Captain if you tip that flag to (King of England) you won't live to see the light of morn? upon the enormous public outcry the Shot Putter and Captain are requested to explain themselves on World Wide Radio the following day. His response, "This Flag was never intended to be tipped to an earthly King". Hushed the outrage and a law was passed and since then the American Flag has never been tipped?

This nation was established to escape the tyranny of monarchs, and I guess these Olympians stuck to their guns. God bless them for doing so. Obviously, you should always give heads of state their proper respect, but never a servant.

I won't be surprised if Team USA doesn't dip the flag in London 2012.

It hasn't been done since 1908 when the Olympics were in London for the first time.

out of curiousity, is this actually recorded colour film or is it colourized after the fact?

I'm fairly certain it was filmed in color. Color film did exist then, although it was rare. It would've been used for something "special," such as this.

The 1948 Olympics were filmed in original color, but not using color film.

The opening ceremony was shot in three-strip Technicolor, which records full color (all three primary colors). The athletic events were shot on two-color bipack, which only records partial color (blues and greens mixed-together).

Both processes use only black-and-white film. Color negative film did exist, but was not yet commercially viable.
