President Ronald Reagan - Address on the Challenger Disaster

An address to the nation from the Oval Office on an evening scheduled for the State of the Union address. The space shuttle Challenger was supposed to be the first mission to put a civilian into space. He reminds his audience of the bravery and dedication of those who were killed on the shuttle.

Some would rate him in the middle in terms of his actions. I choose to rate him at the top in terms of what he DIDN'T do. He pulled the Marines out of Lebanon, kept our actions against Libya down to a short bombing effor.

Contrary to some charicatures, he was very conflict-averse. Abortions weren't banned under his administration, and the right-wingers in Congress didn't succeed in putting prayer in the schools. He didn't stick his face into every single argument.

I think many citizens rate Reagan so well because of his enormous amount of speaking ability. If you look at everything he actually did or wanted to do, I would rate him around the middle in terms of all U.S. presidents. He did some good things, spoke well, but in the end many of his mistakes led us down a dangerous path. One of environmental carelessness and economic missteps. I don't hate Reagan, or even dislike him; it just seems many people feel he was the greatest ever, as is evident here.
