Operation Cold Chop - Kwame Nkrumah Overthrown - February 1966

This short sequence of clips shows scenes resulting from Operation Cold Chop, the codename for the operation to remove the President of Ghana, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, from power, on the 24th of February 1966.

While Nkrumah was bound for Peking, PR China, on a state visit, senior officers of the Ghana Army & Police conducted a successful coup to remove him in power. This largely occured as a result of the declining economic conditions in Ghana at the time, and subsequent civil unrest.

The sequence show Nkrumah in Peking on arrival in Peking, having learned of the successful coup, and also scenes from Accra, including the toppled statue of Nkrumah that stood out the front of Flagstaff House, the seat of power, before being toppled by an armoured car when the last resistance from Nkrumah's Presidential Guard ended. The final scenes show the public demonstrations in the aftermath of the coup, with people supporting the coup and denouncing Nkrumah.
