i am a descendant of the 1783 Black Refugees who immigrated to Sierra Leone in 1792 and founded Freetown. They are rather annoyingly called "Black Loyalists" by the Canadians. Most of the Maroons were settled and Sierra Leone and the overwhelmingly majority remained in Sierra Leone, though some immigrated back to the Jamaica and possibly back to Canada. Even the 1792 settlers went back to the States and maybe some went to Canada...even though the overwhelming majority stated in Sierra Leone.
Most Maroons were shipped to Africa but in an unbelievable turn of destiny, their descendants returned as free laborers in the 1880's back to Jamaica. They settled in St. Thomas Parish and brought with them celebrations and traditions that are now cherished and practiced throughout Jamaica. Example Kumina.
Thanks for shareing this . I seen Doc. on TV this morning similar to this post. Black ppl. did come from Suth Carolnia to N.S. for a better life , and did we not have an underground system here to help get the ppl. from America ?? This I have to find out . Diana , Cape Breton Island
