This movie was released as sort of a sequel to THE DESERT FOX(1951). Richard Burton stars as a British army officer in charge of a battalion of Australian troops fighting the Germans near Tobruk during the North African campaign of WW 2. James Mason reprised his role as German General Rommel(his leading role in THE DESERT FOX), and Robert Newton portrays a cowardly, alcoholic middle-aged soldier who was once Burton's character's school teacher. Torin Thatcher and Chips Rafferty costar.

  • I LOVED this movie when I was a kid. I have to find it again! xD

  • I used to work with a fellow who was one of the Desert Rats..his name was Roy (Toge) Mudford...he related many amazing stories of that time to me...they certainly were heroes.....RIP Roy

  • i remember i loved this when i was about 12 years old, now i must find it again xD

  • My goodness, Richard Burton would make even a commercial for Cheerios riveting to watch.

  • @drumdust dude I don't know where are you from but if you british please forgive me but I haven't got any respect to give them. Firstly, If Hitler behaved more carefully and realistic in WWII all of us is on German command. Rommel wrote a history. He is succed to defeat more than 200 tanks with 30 tanks. Think,if rommel have more air and tank support... Secondly, British used fuckin' arabs like WWI too. I have no respect from two of them.

  • @squmdata Sorry mate.

The Aussie "Rat's" held of the might off the German war machine.

The ONLY country to ever do so.

With the help of the British Artillery.

So to call them poor bastards isn't really giving them the respect they are due.

But yes, General Rommel was certainly a legend.

  • @RichardElden

He and Brando were quite alike in that way: they both just didn't care after a certain point: with Brando it was One Eyed Jacks, that seemed to cure him, with Burton I suspect it was something else, not sure, though look at Mitchum, a fine fine actor all the way, Burton never gave a performance like Mitch's in Cape Fear, yet Mitchum said baby I just dont care and the sonofabitch did to his last very odd creatures these actors.

  • Robert Doughlas in this is very fine: for once not a villain: and Rommels accent in this by Mason is one of his few forays into any accent and Burton was very good and subdued before people started telling him how great he was: after a while he just started bellowing out everything in that distinctive voice for his paycheck, but here he is still trying his best. It didnt last long though, but here we get a glimpse of how good he was. Before Cleopatra.

  • ".....the crucible of searing gunfire." This was the prequel to "The Desert Fox," also featuring a superb James Mason as Rommel. Surprisingly, Mason used a German accent in this movie, which he abandoned for "The Desert Fox."

  • And all shot in Riverside and San Diego Counties in Southern California!
