This is an early video experimenting with low resistance "Aiki Boxing" - in this drill, Uke has straight punches, while Nage is trying to maintain standard "ma-ai" (safe distance) until Uke commits an attack (switching to a simple boxing defense if Uke enters "boxing ma-ai"). Nage can crash (irimi) to "clinch ma-ai", slip to the back, or catch one of the first three techniques we teach: Rokkyo, Americana, or Kimura.

Our learning from this is that it is best to maintain full boxing defense (Crazy Monkey) and establish the clinch by and large before executing technique.

Mixed Martial Aikido is an evolutionary exploration building alive sparring into Aikido training. Stay tuned for more...

  • All god comment below, including the negative ones. see "skinnymonkey" youtube vids to see our attempts a few years ago to do the same stuff. We also called it aikiboxing, interestingly enough. I'm a Tomiki-ryu stylist in my aikido, here is rule of thumb for toshu randori: when hands are far from body, wrist techniques, when hands are in mid range, elbow techniques, when close to the head, atemi techniques. Good luck, look forward to more vids.

  • @AikidoBob Yes, I remember watching your guys' Aiki-Boxing videos! Thanks for the inspiration and guidance here and in those vids. Feel free to build on what you find here and post videos back!

  • Good stuff guys ! Keep with it, you are probably on the path to something big. How does Shomen Ate figure in your system ?

  • @DandDskeeto Thanks! Try some of the other videos (10.17 sparring I think) - shomen ate is mixed in. Interesting that when the opponent has double unders in the clinch (which is normally a position of disadvantage) the chin is more available.

  • It's seems more like Hatenkai aikido than Tomiki (Shodokan aikido ) . that's a good initiative but you guys need research and pratice more .

Adapt aikido for a dinamic real fight is too dificult but keep on trying .

  • @AverageJoe843 Yes, Hatenkai was the initial inspiration to start down this path - although I'm combining Aikido, BJJ, and kickboxing whereas I believe he is Kyokushinkai + Aikido. And yes, lots of research and practice ahead. Try some of the other videos... Thanks!

  • You guys are doing an awesome thing. thanks for the vid.

  • @MrAikendoMan Yes I too think sparring would be really good, I've been training techniques for a while now but I never could use them in a fight because I never sparred using them, unlike my previous martial art, pencak silat - silak tuo, where we sparred a lot.

  • On one hand when I see this I think, that's great an Aikido guy with a practical grasp on what works. On the other hand I think if you guys keep training like this you could reinvent Juijitsu out of Aikido? Almost like going back in time before Morihei Ueshiba or reverse engineering Juijitsu... Just kidding good stuff keep it up!

  • @IntegralMartialArts

You're going to the same way of Hiroo Mochizuki , when he aggregated skills from boxing , Judo and Karate to his Aikido and that' s is a very good project . And remember to focus ever on the atemis . Like Gozo Shioda used to say , in a real fight , Aikido is 70% atemi .

Keep on moving . I wish the best for Aiki boxing.

PS: Your channel is interesting , nice way for me to keep informed about Aikiboxing .

  • @theshninja Thanks, yes I've drawn inspiration from Tomiki and Hatenkai and am in some new territory here! I am open to any input from alive approaches at this point!
