I grew up with a Spectrum and loved it passionately. That said, this is clearly just a quick port from that with a few colours thrown in. When you consider that the original Amiga version was all about ambience and atmosphere, that the spectrum managed to pull off that atmosphere quite well in its little monochrome way and what the Amstrad could have done with this game graphically, it's a bit of a shame the developers didn't put a little more love into it.
@mashk cpc games were plagued by conversions from zx spectrum basecode - few cpc games were properly "ported" and a lot of bad ports form zx - what was to be a compatibility feature of the cpc turned out to be its greatest "flaw" - truly a lot of untapped potential in the cpc
It's a shame more developers didn't make use of the CPC 464's 4 colour 320 x 200 mode. As it looks far better than the horrible 16 colour blocky mode that most used. Regardless of the gameplay, the graphics were brilliantly designed.
@zachthezombie The sound chip is less capable than the C64's but it can make some good tunes. Of course it can! Check out Ghosts 'n' goblins for an example.
The level 1 music in Xyphoe's fantasy is probably my favourite for the CPC.
