Steven Koonin, undersecretary of energy for science, says that there is going to be at least a three-decade, phased period toward a possible electric-car future. In an interview with Steve LeVine of the Oil and the Glory, the Foreign Policy magazine blog, Koonin said that first will be more efficient cars using up to 25 percent less gasoline. Then will become broad adoption of plug-in hybrids. What isn't known is whether scientists can make the big leaps necessary in advanced batteries to bring pure electric cars into wide use, but that even if they do, that won't happen for at least three decades. He made the remarks at CERA Week, the oil industry conference in Houston.
