What a knockout the Samson was! But deadly, it seems, although The Blue Angels had a midair, and the Thunderbirds made a formation dive into the ground. Airshows are still dangerous.
The true gentleman flying this aircraft, Bobby Younkin lost his life July 10th 2005 in a mid-air collision with Jimmy Franklin at a commerative airshow. It was an unfortunate accident and neither pilot was to blame. The first Pitts Samson was lost in a mid air in Fayetteville in the early '50s in another mid-air. Of the 5 Pitts Samson's built the 3 Airshow Aicraft have been destroyed takin 2 of the pilots. The Samson is a rock solid flyer that has had some bad luck.
