Afro-Latin@ facts addresses the undercounted of Afro-Latin@s in previous census drives. Such an undercount not only denies the African aspect of Latin@ identity. It deprives organizations of resources they need to improve the lives of this community.

By proclaiming Check Both!/¡Chequea las dos! the bilingual spots highlight the importance for Latin@s of African descent to self-identify as such on the Census.

The implications of the count are far-reaching, determining how $400 billion in federal funds are distributed to local governments each year. Over 10 years, a community could lose a projected $1.2 million of federal funding for housing, health and education programs for every 100 persons that are not counted, according to the NAACP. Studies have established that despite a higher educational level Black Latin@s have the highest rate of unemployment and are more likely to live below the poverty level than other Latin@s.

  • This group has to be the most confused group to others in the states! As well as West Indian people. People seem to just not understand that there are people of many different races in Latin American (black, white, asian, native, w/e).I try to exPLAIN BUT PPL SAY HOW YOU BLACK AND HISPANIC. im saying hispanic isnt a race! but ignorance will always be here & im afro-panamanian !

  • @chsn09 I am fully Latino. I am also fully black. people dont seem to understand that the 2 can coexist. I never try to separate myself or other afrodecendants from wtv ethnic group they r in. I reject the term afro latino & african/afro-american becuz it makes me sound like somethin other than American or Latino becuz mixed or white latinos r calld simply latino/a & white americans r jus american. I love my african ancestry but I am more than jus African,or American or Latino. Im 100% all 3

  • good video more people need to realize this

  • I think what also makes it a problem is ourselves. As a Dominican with clearly African roots my people are unwilling to call themselves black. They call themselves "Indio/a" and when they get to the U.S. the situation becomes further confusing. Because they are either A) white but the census considers all Dominicans and Dominican-Americans black or B) they really are black and they are in complete denial and shock.

  • I thought I was the only hispanic (Dominican to be more exact) having this problem. I have actually had people tell me I am white because there is no way I could be black. I have had African-Americans tell me I am not black because I do not know what it means "to be black". People are ignorant and have no idea that Hispanic is not a race hence why they are not counted as such in any census. There are black and white Hispanics. Its honestly kinda offensive.

  • I try to explain this to people but never understand.

  • I dont get it. Are there more than 1 million afro-latins in the U.S.?

also the majority of people tend to label populations on skin color. the vast majority of latino's are brown-skinned or lighter.

The way i see it, and many are going to argue with me on this, is that Afro-latins should get used to be called black, because future generations of afro-latins in the US will forget spanish and just be considered black anyway. Embrace it. Blacks have a great history in this country.

  • I check African and Other Latino which would be Dominican.

  • The problem with some Black Latinos is that America is racialy charged so you are black, white, or white hispanic. You pick a side and thats how your judged. Some latinos that look more black than some white and black mixed people deny there African bloodline.

  • On the census I checked white, black, Native Native American, Hispanic and put Triracial.

  • @lui920 There is no section for afro latinos they are telling them to check hispanic and black... native american is also an option as is white and asian or u can simply check other
