In the USA, there would have been many additional parties to a call, if one were on a "party line". On a party line, many households were just extensions on a single line, so anyone could just pick up their phone & listen in.
Did the GPO use a party line system in the UK?

Chichester New Park Centre - England. Funnily enough they just had the GPO compilation (of which this was a part) back there. You can also get it on DVD now.
